A quick look

  • Wyoming is the least populous state in the union. It even has nearly 100,000 fewer residents than Washington, D.C.
  • Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons offer outstanding vistas.
  • State web site

Terrain

  • Not as mountainous as Colorado, but has its fair share of mountain passes.
  • Wyoming boasts the second highest average elevation in the country at 6700 feet, second only to Colorado.

Weather

  • High winds, generally from the southeast which should be helpful.
  • Fairly cool, semiarid days and cool weather at night.
  • Cloudbursts, heavy hailstorms, and thunderstorms are common.

This is the most desolate state on the route if you don't count prairie dogs, pronghorn, badgers, and jack rabbits. The TransAmerica route intersects both the Oregon Trail and the Pony Express Route near Split Rock.

Yellowstone National Park is expected to be the highlight of this state. This 2.2 million acre National Park is home to a huge variety of mammals not found in the eastern states. Yellowstone, our nation's oldest National Park, is home to Old Faithful as well as other geothermal features.
