Colorado
Segment 6th State
Days 10
Mileage (% of total) 440.9 mi (10%)

A quick look

  • This mountainous state will be my introduction to the Rockies.
  • Home to small towns, grand views, beautiful mountain streams, and a wide variety of wildlife.
  • Colorado, the "Roof of America," has the highest average elevation of any state (6800') and boasts the tallest peaks in the Rockies.
  • State web site

Terrain

  • Flat in the east; rugged mountains in the west.
  • Hoosier Pass is the highest point on the route at 11,542 feet

Weather

  • Dust storms are common in eastern Colorado as are thunderstorms and hailstorms.
  • Eastern Colorado is semiarid with warm or hot summer days with low humidity
  • Cool nights and warm days at high elevation. At the highest points it can even be cold during the day.

The easternmost portion of the state is the western edge of the Great Plains and should be a continuation of the terrain and sights in Kansas. After Pueblo the route turns north and up into the mountains.

Just as I'm getting used to (or sick of) the Great Plains, I'll encounter the rugged Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Colorado's five mountain ranges (Front, Park, and Sawatch ranges and the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo Mountains) will prove to be challenging.

The end of the Colorado segment meets Wyoming in the middle of nowhere, which is appropriate for Wyoming.
