Stove Selection & Stove Science

Cooking outdoors is not unlike cooking in a kitchen. Specialized stoves, fuel, pots, pans and utensils are used to create meals that can be the same as or similar to those cooked at home. Since weight is a major consideration most of these products weigh far less than those at home.

There are dozens of lightweight stoves that are suitable for bicycle touring. Each stove manufacturer produces a variety of stoves to meet the diverse needs of backpackers, touring cyclists, and other outdoors travelers. It is up to the individual to decide what stove best meets his or her needs.

Considerations

  • Fuel Type - Fuel type is the most significant consideration when it comes to stove selection. Stoves use a either a liquid fuel called "white gas" or a pressurized canister type fuel.
  • Weight - Most camping stoves weight between 4 ounces and 2 pounds. Since every last ounce counts when climbing 146,000 feet on the TransAmerica route, the stove
